The results of 2019 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad have been announced recently. As a 2019 PhD graduate from the University of Liverpool, our postdoctoral fellow Ni Kai became the only winner of the University of Liverpool (only 500 winners worldwide).

Dr. Ni Kai studied electrical engineering at the University of Liverpool, UK. After receiving the First Class B.Eng. (Hons) degree in 2016, he continued to study for a PhD degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool. After obtaining the PhDdegree in December 2019, he joined the Center for Advanced Electrical Machines and Drives (CAEMD) of SEEE at HUST as a postdoctoral fellow with the funding from “International Postdoctoral Exchange Fellowship Program (Talent-Introduction Program)” (600,000 yuan). His cooperation supervisor is Professor Gan Chun.

Ni’s research interests include modelling and analysis of more-electric aircraft / ship power systems, control and stability analysis of doubly-fed induction machines, and power electronic converters. He has headed and participated in a number of research projects, including China Postdoctoral Science Foundation project, British Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory project, EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation project, Sino-British cooperation project, etc. He has published more than 20 SCI papers as the first or corresponding author, and served as a reviewer for many authoritative academic journals such as IEEE TIE and IEEE TPEL. During his study in the UK, Ni won many honorary awards, such as 2019 Graduate Association Scholarship of the University of Liverpool (the only winner of the University), 2018 Graduate Scholarship of University of Liverpool, 2019 Outstanding Doctoral Report Speech Award of the British Doctoral Forum, 2019 Merit Poster Award of Transportation Electrification Low Carbon Summit, the runner-up in the Merseyside and Cheshire West Division of 2017 IET “Presentation Around The World” speech competition, etc. Besides, on March 13, 2019, he was invited by the STEM for Britain Engineering Section to display his research achievements in the British House of Commons.

In order to reward the outstanding self-financed overseas students for their outstanding academic achievements and encourage them to return to work or serve the country in various forms, China Scholarship Council established the "Chinese Government Scholarship for Outstanding Self-financed Students" program in 2003 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The scholarship is awarded to 500 students every year in 29 countries. The Scholarship Council is responsible for organizing domestic experts to conduct the final review of materials of the recommended candidates. The award results is announced after being approved by the Ministry of Education.
