Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is among the top 10 universities in China. HUST was one of the first universities selected into the national “Project 211,” “Project 985” and the first group of national “Double First-Class” universities in 2017. HUST is located in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, on the central banks of the Yangtze River. The university has a main campus situated near the East Lake and a satellite medical campus located in the central business district of Hankou on the other side of the Yangtze River. HUST’s campus covers an area of over 470 hectares and has 72% greenery coverage, and thus HUST is honored as the “University in the Forest.” The adjacent “East Lake Greenway” provides a world-class leisure and fitness “backyard garden” for faculty, staff and students.
The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SEEE) at Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1952, which is among the oldest schools in the university. During the past 70 years, every day we are hard at work pushing new frontiers in Electrical Engineering (EE) with innovative teaching and state-of-the-art research. Nowadays, it is a top-3 EE education and research institution in China with broad international collaboration and excellent reputation. The SEEE graduates have been at the forefront of a great many of scientific and technological advances, including over 10 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and over 20 presidents in top Chinese universities. SEEE holds the promise of continuing this momentum in both research and education, across the full spectrum of the school’s activities like optimizing organization structure, forming strategic faculty team, and developing distinctive degree programs.
The current organization structure of SEEE includes 5 departments, 3 department-level institutions, as well as 2 education centers. As its founding philosophy, the SEEE forms an EE framework that has developed into various forms and penetrated into other schools in the university, thus positioning our EE as the “nucleus of engineering.” Under current organization structure, the SEEE has been conducting a broad portfolio of cutting-edge research related to electric power for several decades, with a particular concentration on the new fundamental theories and core technologies for economic development, scientific advancement, as well as emerging needs. Meanwhile, by promoting the interdisciplinary research and exploring the fundamental theories and applications, SEEE has also developed multidisciplinary research applied to nuclear fusion, particle accelerators, and other fields, making the EE discipline a more intact and systematic research framework.
The SEEE maintains a top-notch faculty team with high quality of teaching and academic achievements, which provides a solid foundation for talent cultivation and EE discipline development. Currently, there are 200 faculty members, encompassing 97 professors, 72 associate professors and 31 assistant professors. Faculty members with overseas experience are up to 35%, and 92% of faculty members hold PhD degrees. There is 1 Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 IEEE Fellows, 2 IET Fellows, 4 Changjiang Scholars, 12 Principal Investigators of national major and key research projects, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of NSFC, 3 winners of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund of NSFC, and 18 high-level overseas talents. Many faculty members serve in significant science and technology committee such as the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Planning Committee, the National Major Special Expert Committee, and the International Association of High Magnetic Field.
Currently, the SEEE has more than 1,700 undergraduate students and more than 1,000 graduate students on campus. As one of the largest schools in HUST, the SEEE enrolls about 380 undergraduate students each year and always maintains the high entry score throughout the university. All undergraduate students admitted to the SEEE are the top 5‰ of students taking the National College Entrance Examination. The low admission ratio and high enrolling score assure the entry quality of the undergraduates. The graduate students are enrolled through three pathways: direct-recommended from the SEEE (rank among the top 25%), direct-recommended from other universities (top EE institutions in China, the top 5% GPA ranking), and the Unified National Graduate Entrance Examination (admission ratio is about 12%). Most of the admitted students are from “Project 985” or “Project 211” universities in China. The quality of talent training has been highly recognized by society.
The SEEE has undertaken a number of important national research projects with more than 300 million RMB research funding in 2018. In recent 5 years, more than 600 patents have been issued by China, Europe and US, and more than 2000 SCI papers have been published. Moreover, 2 first-prizes and 9 second-prizes of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award were conferred. The School has established long-term and deep international collaborations with more than 20 scientific research institutions including Princeton University, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (USA), the Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics (Germany), the Controlled Fusion Institute of French Atomic Energy Commission, and was invited to participate in the international joint experiment of the International Tokamak Physics Activity. The School has undertaken 7 Sino-U.S. fusion cooperation projects jointly organized by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the U.S. Department of Energy.
To sum up, focusing on fundamental theories and core technologies while exploring interdisciplinary research and emerging applications, the SEEE has formed a distinctive feature of multidisciplinary education programs and research areas. Lots of scientific research achievements have gained extensive world-wide attention and received national and international recognition. All SEEE faculty members and students are working together to make it as a world-leading research and education institution. Furthermore, through partnering with academic, industrial and governmental entities that share and enhance the mission of SEEE, our educational and collaborative efforts would result in the maximum, positive, economic impact locally, regionally, nationally and globally.
